"A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has you see what you don't want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be" -Tom Landry

This page is constructed of hyperlinks, books, and websites that not only helped me during my academic experience throughout the Master of Art's in Education program, but also promote lifelong learning outside the classroom. As educators, it is important that we continue to be students of the sport and stay up to date with the latest research and coaching methods presented. I have attached some helpful pages to promote learning in sport coaching and leadership.

Insideout Coaching.jpg

I read InSideOut Coaching while taking KIN857- Promoting Positive Youth Development/Sport (which was my favorite class within the sport coaching and leadership concentration). We had to break down the text and apply the author's thoughts and ideas to our own coaching context. This book was very eye-opening and gave me lot's of information on how to be a transformational coach for young athletes. It is an easy read and I would highly recommend coaches of all age groups to read it.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is an organization that writes the rules and regulations for high school athletics. The NFHS offers online educational courses ranging from officiating different sports, cardiac arrest, injury prevention, concussion safety, sports nutrition, protecting students from abuse, understanding vaping and e-cigarettes, and the list goes on. Many elective courses are free and can be taken at your convenience.

Search Institute.png

The Search Institute is a research-based website that partners with organizations to conduct and apply research that promotes positive youth development and advances equity. With a focus on developmental relationships, developmental assets, and youth development, the Search Institute is an excellent resource to understand the importance of incorporating developmental assets into youth sports.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) is a great resource for high school coaches and administrators to stay up to date with sport-specific covid-19 guidelines and competition schedules, as well as educational opportunities and coaching clinics. The MHSAA offers leadership training and health/safety resources to ensure high school coaches are keeping their athletes healthy and safe while participating in organized sport.

The Energy Bus was one of the first books I read when I began pursuing my masters degree. This book talks about 10 rules to to fuel your work, life, and team with positive energy. Many NFL teams have used this book as a resource to improve their teamwork and leadership skills, and it would be a great book to read for a team-building activity. Check out the website to see how many CEO's and head coaches praise the Energy Bus!

Athletic.net is an online database for high school cross-country and track and field results. After competition, results are uploaded to Athletic.net. Coaches, spectators, and fans can find specific meet results, as well as individual athlete results. This is a great tool for running coaches, as well as college recruiters. The site is easy to maneuver and results are uploaded in a timely manner.

tffrs.jpg

The Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) is an online database for collegiate cross country and track and field. TFRRS has meet results, as well as NCAA qualifying lists, conference lists, and individual athlete profiles. TFRRS is great for recruiting. Similar to Athletic.net, TFRRS is easy to use and competition results are uploaded in a timely manner.

How I Became the Fittest Woman on Earth has been one of my favorite reads while being a student-athlete. Written by Tia-Clair Toomey, a 2016 weightlifting Olympian, Commonwealth Games gold medalist, and 4x CrossFit Games champion, Tia shares her story and what it takes to be an elite athlete. Not only is Tia an amazing athlete, she is a fearless leader, and by sharing her story, she has inspired people worldwide to strive to be the best versions of themselves.

Girl with the brown crayon.jpg

I read The Girl with the Brown Crayon in ED800- Concepts of Educational Inquiry. This was the very first class I took at Michigan State University. The author Vivian Paley writes about self-discovery and how different forms of inquiry can affect child development. She explores their creativity and how they think. I would recommend this book to coaches working with young athletes.

MITCA is the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association. Open to all cross-country and track coaches in the state of Michigan, the MITCA is an excellent resource for sharing athletic and academic guidelines, seasonal coaching clinics, elite competitions, and covid-19 guidelines. MITCA is a great outlet for coaches to network and create safe and educational environments for high school student athletes.
